4 Tips for a Software Engineer during an interview
Often, I am asked this question by our students at Programming Pathshala:
“How can a software engineer impress the interviewer during an interview apart from just getting the questions right?”
Hi, my name is Bharat Khanna and I am one of the Co-Founders here at Programming Pathshala.
Apart from getting the interview problems right (most important still), there are a few other skills that are very valued by organisations -
1. Communication Skills: The ability to explain your right approach is equally important. You should be able to clearly communicate your ideas in the interview.
2. Listening Skills and ability to understand hints: The interview is a two-
way communication and not a monologue. So, in 90% of the cases, if you
are stuck somewhere or are in the wrong direction, the interviewer gives out
hints. It is very important to listen to them carefully and improvise based on
them.
3. Confidence and Leadership Skills: Being shaky or under-confident of your skills or approach may have a negative impact. On the other hand, being
overconfident and arguing/not listening to the interviewer is worse (Check
point 1). To answer behavioural questions well, go through the company’s
ideologies and principles that the org follows.
4. Step-by-step approach to answer the problem: The path to reach the
answer is as equally important as the actual answer. There should be a
coherent thought process visible in your solutions and the steps you took to
reach there. (In short problem-solving skills)
Hope you find it useful!
