In conversation with Mayank Kumar, a student of Programming Pathshala who hailing from Non Tech background has managed to become an SDE with Pratilipi, Let’s read his story of transition in his own words…

#100Stories is a series of transformational stories of courage and indomitable will to excel, picked from the lives of tech students, particularly in India. Initiative by Programming Pathshala.

Hi Mayank, Happy to have you here! Can you please Introduce yourself ?

Sure, Hey everyone, my name is Mayank Kumar and I am a graduate in Electrical engineering from Thapar University, Patiala. I come with an experience of One and a half years working as a Design Engineer with Sterling and Wilson. My work was basically in Electrical engineering, revolving around Designing. I soon realised that I wasn’t liking that work so much and decided to switch careers. Initially I was inclined towards Management but kept practising programming simultaneously, soon after I discovered Programming Pathshala, I decided to dedicate my preparations for programming and kept going with the same. After a span of 6 months dedicating myself to the course, I also managed to do a project with Programming Pathshala which helped me as a new addition to my resume.

So Mayank, you told us that you were confused while choosing between Management and Programming, so what made you decide to pursue Programming and not Management later on?

Actually, I just found myself more interested towards programming, at that time Coronavirus was at its peak too and I faced rejections from few of the colleges that I applied to for my Management studies.

Fair enough, so Mayank you are all set to join Pratilipi as their SDE now. How does it feel?

It honestly feel amazing, as I did not have any background in Software Engineering, my field was electrical and I did not even have any good projects in hand earlier, so the transition wasn’t easy, however I managed to become a SDE and it makes me feel so good about all the hard work that I’ve put in. Really grateful for Programming Pathshala for the same.

Amazing Mayank, So how was your Resume building process to you cracking the Interview rounds, Can you take us through your Journey to Pratilipi?

For resume building, Anoop bhaiya is the saviour, he told me to use Latex format and I went with it to frame my resume soon after that I realised that I did not have anything much to showcase in my resume so I turned to Anoop bhaiya for giving me some project to work upon and ended up making one Notification feature at Programming Pathshala’s website along with a teammate.

Oh wow! So you have worked for our Dashboard, coming to this, How has been your experience with Programming Pathshala as whole? With Renaissance and everything here?

Initially, I found the course pretty difficult to begin with, I remember spending almost 2 months on the first module “Arrays and Maths” itself because I was not associated with Programming from starting, but apart from that the course it great, It starts at very basic and keeps you thorough with your concepts till the very end. I never gave up, I made sure to solve at least 2–3 problems everyday and maintained it till the very end. The course shows completeness like everything that you need to know for cracking Interviews, is there!

Great Mayank, so in this Journey, there might have been ups and downs at times, any advice on how you overcame those?

I actually never gave up, I maintained consistency with my preparations and believed in myself. I even had my interests in Programming so that always kept me hooked to the preparations as well. I remember during my course, when I was doing my project with Programming Pathshala I had my friend along who was a content writer, and was preparing to be SDE himself. He and I used to solve problems together and kept each other motivated in times of need. Actually when you join an organisation, the work according to your preparations is very different and it becomes a whole different journey for you, and in those times of need, Bharat bhaiya helped me a lot.

Thank You so much Mayank. It has been lovely to hear about your journey but before you leave, any word of advice for our fellow SDE’s, those who are working hard to crack their way in Top-Tech companies now.

I would suggest to not pile up things, keep practising rigorously and make sure you leave no topic untouched in your preparations. Keep working hard with consistency and you will definitely achieve your dream job soon. Keep hustling!

Thankyou for connecting with me, Mayank. We wish you all the best as you venture into this new journey for yourself!
